Legal DocumentsWhile you’d like to avoid the legal system as much as possible during your life, chances are good that you’ll need to sign some legal documents at some point – and not in your own blood. When it comes to navigating the legal system, everyone needs a little help, unless they’re a lawyer or a judge. If you should find yourself needing to sign legal documents today or in the future, you might want to follow some basic advice to ensure you don’t sign away your soul. Understand the DocumentEven if it means that you need to take the legal document home with you to read it carefully, do it. You don’t want to sign anything unless you are absolutely positive you know everything that is on the paper. You need to make sure that the contract works fro you and that it includes all of the things you and the other person or company talked about as well. If you don’t understand something, make sure you have it explained to you in detail until you DO understand it. You don’t want to be surprised by anything in the document, even if the contract doesn’t seem like it’s that big of a deal. Get a LawyerThough you might be sure you know what is happening in your legal situation, a lawyer is a good idea too. You need to make sure that you are getting someone who will watch out for you and who knows the system better than you. A lawyer can read the document, make sure it’s fair, and then they can show you how to protect yourself in the future. This person will also be able to recommend other things you might want to do when you are in the legal process, allowing you to come out of the process without feeling like you’ve been cheated. Keep a CopyNo matter what you are signing, you need to make sure that you have a copy of it as well. This way, you have a record of what you agreed to, when you agreed to it, and you can reference this sheet whenever you need to do so. You will want to keep these papers in a safe place as well, like a firebox or a safety deposit box. In these secure places, no one will be able to change the document and you can get to it anytime now or in the future. It’s also a good idea to scan a copy and save it on a disk to give to your lawyer in case you need to look at it again. They should have the original copy or a paper copy, but digital is helpful too. Legal documents are often long and boring, but they should not be detrimental to you. When you have legal support, a good grasp of the content, and a copy on hand, you should have everything you need to back yourself up should you need to revist your legal situation in the future. |
